Follow-up e-mail to a job interview: our tips
Posted at 18/07/2022
Sending a follow-up email at post-interview time, is a crucial step that can earn you points when it comes to the recruiter deciding the right person for the available position.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FOLLOW UP E-MAIL
It's usual for us to talk about preparing for a job interview. But what about after the interview? Once you have obtained an interview, know that it is still in your hands to be able to positively influence the recruiter to a favourable decision. Why? This is a way to show proactivity and your interest in the job, to stand out from other candidates, to show your writing skills by writing a good e-mail and even to show other types of skills such as the so-called soft skills, which are increasingly valued in the labour market, related to emotional intelligence and interpersonal capacities.
In addition, it may allow you to answer some questions that were not clarified during the interview and that may be relevant to the position you are applying for.
OUR TIPS
Mention the position you are applying for
Never forget that, besides the fact that in recruitment processes there are many candidates applying for the same position, the same recruiter is often in charge of more than one recruitment process. So, a good way to stand out from your competition is to remind the recruiter of the position you are applying for.
Thanking
This is one of the first points in the follow up letter to a job interview. The simple gesture of saying thank you is something so simple, yet very important. This is a way of showing cordiality and demonstrating emotional intelligence and interpersonal competences - the much-valued soft skills.
Showing enthusiasm for the job
Here you can highlight the most important aspects of the interview, showing enthusiasm for the position and functions you are applying for. At this point it may make sense to mention something that was discussed during the interview or even draw attention to some point that you may have forgotten to mention during the interview. If you consider it relevant to your application, you may include a link to a social media, such as LinkedIn, where it is possible to verify some important professional achievement or positive testimonials from colleagues, for example. Please note that the social media to be used must not contain errors, should always be updated and should not contain content that may reflect an unprofessional image of you.
Reinforce why you are the right candidate for that position
This is usually a question that is usually asked during interviews and can cause some embarrassment to candidates. Whether the question was asked during the interview or not, you can always reinforce that certainly this offer has motivated many appliants but that your experience fits perfectly with what the company is looking for. You should always justify your indication by giving practical examples using some of your professional experience to support this statement.
After getting to know the culture of the company you are applying for and finding common points that could unite you, try to emphasize them by stressing the benefits that could come from joining the team.
Make yourself available for a new interview
At the end of your e-mail, you should conclude your presentation by showing your availability for a second interview where any open points can be clarified.
WHAT IF I AM NEVER CONTACTED?
You have already done your interview, sent your follow up e-mail and still haven't heard back? Do not despair! Recruitment processes are often delayed, and if a few days have passed since your interview, it does not mean that you have not been considered for the next stage. It is normal for recruiters to provide a deadline for candidates to respond. In fact, it may happen that this deadline has been exceeded for some reason. On the other hand, it may even be that no feedback has been given to candidates who have fallen by the wayside in the recruitment process. What we suggest is that if the deadline for a response from the company has passed, you should contact them and ask them about the result of your candidature. You can make this contact through an e-mail, or even through a telephone call to the Human Resources department, for example. If this recruitment process has not had the expected outcome, do not give up! Keep your focus on looking for other opportunities. The right job is waiting for you!
